Blindsided

You think you have it
until it slips through your fingers.
You try to brush it off
but the pain lingers.
Excitement flows abundantly
until the news breaks
at which point joy's drought
begins to drain optimism's lake.
Happiness that hours ago
overflowed and could not be contained
now only has remnants
of positive thoughts that remain.
Hopes for the future
that we never had before
are now dashed from our minds
as our hearts seem to have shut their door.
With only each other
to turn to in moments like now,
we try to pick up the pieces in what inexplicably happened somehow.
We thought we had it
until it slipped through our hands
as now our heads drop down
and our minds must establish a new plan.
